I recently had the pleasure of transforming three pieces of vintage wood furniture into a stunning set. Although each piece had its own history and origins, I saw their potential to fit together seamlessly. The set consisted of a gorgeous bench, a charming side table, and an adorable three-tiered heart stand – all with delightful heart cutouts. Join me to see before and after transformation of this upcycled wood furniture set!
Upcycled Wood Furniture: Before
Prep & Sanding
Before diving into the fun part of the makeover, I had to tackle some repair work. The furniture had been around for a while, and as a result, suffered some damage over the years. I began by giving each piece a thorough cleaning – vacuuming all the dirt, grime, and cobwebs away before wiping them down with Simple Green degreaser. After wiping them off with a clean, damp rag, I allowed them to dry completely before I used some DAP plastic wood filler to patch up any nicks and dings, and the furniture was ready for sanding.
The sanding process was a breeze since the finish on the pieces was old and worn. Starting with 100-grit sandpaper, I worked my way up to 180 grit, vacuuming up any dust as I went along. A final wipe with a tack cloth and now the pieces are ready for priming.
Priming & Painting
Next up was priming, and I opted for KILZ original primer. After applying a coat to each piece, I gave them a scuff sanding before beginning the painting process. I knew this set would be perfect for a sunroom or screened-in porch, so I chose “Americana Egg” by Magnolia Homes by Joanna Gaines for the color. The resulting dried sage hue was exactly what I had envisioned. While I initially considered using a soft pink chalk paint, such as “Paloma” or “Antoinette” by Annie Sloan, the green was the perfect choice to create a calming atmosphere.
Adding a little water to the paint, about 1 tbsp per 2 cups, helped to achieve the perfect consistency. I used a microfiber paint roller to apply the paint, and the resulting texture was exactly what I had hoped for. The paint covered beautifully, requiring only two coats.
To protect the furniture and give it a polished finish, I sealed each piece with beeswax. The final result was a stunning set of upcycled wood furniture that will look great in any room. I’m thrilled with how it turned out and can’t wait to see it in its new home.
